Xiangyang National Forest Recreation Area, National forest recreation area in Haiduan Township, Taiwan
Xiangyang National Forest Recreation Area is a mountain forest zone in Taitung featuring mixed stands of red cypress, hemlock, and fir trees. The terrain rises steeply across elevations between 2,320 and 2,510 meters, creating different forest types as altitude increases.
The Bunun people traditionally lived in this mountain region until Japanese logging operations in the early 1900s prompted relocations of communities. These developments eventually led to the establishment of the forest recreation area as it exists today.
The forest recreation area maintains connections with indigenous traditions through educational programs and nature preservation efforts within Taitung County.
Five marked hiking trails - Xiangyang, Xiangsong, Songjing, Songtao, and Songyang - provide different routes through the forest with varying difficulty levels. Visitors should prepare for high elevation conditions and bring appropriate gear for changing mountain weather.
Xiangrong Shan peak rises to 2,510 meters and offers chances to spot Taiwan macaques and rare pheasant species in their natural habitat. Seasonal cherry blossoms briefly color the higher forest zones at certain times of year.
