向陽名樹, Ancient tree in Haiduan, Taiwan
The Xiangyang Famous Tree is an ancient organism in the Xiangyang Forest Recreation Area, notable for its broad, spreading branches and thick canopy coverage. The specimen grows in a mixed woodland setting at moderate elevation where mountain moisture creates a cool, moist growing environment.
This tree specimen has stood in the Haiduan region since around 1200, enduring significant environmental shifts and natural events across eight centuries. Its long existence spans the period of Japanese colonial influence, when regional settlement patterns underwent substantial transformation.
The tree holds special meaning for the indigenous Bunun people who inhabited the surrounding forests before the Japanese colonial period altered local settlement patterns.
The tree is accessible via marked trails within the Xiangyang Forest Recreation Area and can be visited year-round. Morning hours offer the best viewing conditions, when mountain mists are most visible and light enhances the definition of branches.
The mists that regularly pass through the branches create dramatically different visual effects depending on the time of day and season. This constantly shifting natural display makes each visit a different visual experience, which photographers and nature observers particularly appreciate.
