二子山溫泉, Natural hot spring in Hualien County, Taiwan
Erzi Mountain Hot Spring is a natural thermal stream in the upper Shoufen River valley with waters ranging from 45 to 55 degrees Celsius (113 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit). The flow travels roughly 300 meters through marble rock formations carved by erosion and water movement.
The Taroko indigenous people called this location 'Wulai', meaning 'where hot springs emerge from the earth'. This name reflects how important these thermal waters have been to people in the region for a long time.
Local communities have long valued these pools for their warmth and healing properties, and the site remains a place where visitors experience the earth's natural power. The marble canyon frames these waters as something both practical and spiritual to people in the region.
Access requires a mountain entry permit from Xilin Police Station and a four-wheel-drive vehicle to navigate the rough industrial roads. Plan for challenging terrain and allow extra time for the journey to this remote location.
This site remains largely unknown to many visitors compared to other hot spring destinations in Taiwan, despite its natural beauty and remote setting. Its isolation has helped preserve the area from heavy tourism and development.
