Xueshan Range, Mountain range in northern Taiwan.
The Xueshan Range is a mountain chain in northern Taiwan stretching from Cape Santiago to Zhuoshui Mountain across several counties. Its highest point rises to 3,886 meters above sea level.
During the Qing Dynasty, the mountains were known by several names including Middle Range, Western Range, and Mount Sylvia Range. These different names show how mapmakers and explorers documented the region over time.
The range holds deep meaning for the Atayal indigenous people, who call the main peak Babo Hagai, meaning rock mountain in their language. This naming reflects the enduring connection between the land and its original inhabitants.
Visitors need permits from both Shei-Pa National Park authorities and the Xueshan police office to access the high-altitude hiking trails. Getting these approvals in advance is important, as the process takes time.
The range holds over 50 peaks exceeding 3,000 meters, with many among the most sought-after mountain goals in the country. This high concentration of major summits draws climbers aiming to collect all the classic peaks.
