Tataka, Mountain pass and recreation area in Xinyi, Taiwan.
Tataka is a mountain pass standing at 2610 meters elevation where Provincial Highway 18 and Provincial Highway 21 intersect within Yushan National Park. The location serves as a junction point connecting these two major road routes through the highlands.
Paths in this region were first established by the Atayal people before being developed during Japanese colonial rule for transportation and military purposes. These early routes became the foundation for modern road infrastructure.
The name Tataka comes from the Tsou indigenous language and means broad, flat grasslands that define this mountain region. These open spaces remain visible throughout the area today.
Visitors need entry permits from Paiyun Mountaineering Center and can reach the area by shuttle services running from Upper Dongpu parking lot to the trailhead. Prior registration is required to access this mountain region.
The pass connects multiple climate zones from subtropical to cold mountain environments, with waterfalls and seasonal weather shifts creating distinct settings. This ecological variety creates completely different surroundings within short distances.
