Chihshang Township

Chihshang is a rural township in the Huatung Valley, spanning agricultural areas with rice paddies and mountain views throughout the landscape. The area consists of several distinct villages situated together in a farming region.

The area formed about 160 years ago when indigenous groups settled in this fertile valley and established communities. It gradually developed into an agricultural region with multiple village settlements.

Indigenous communities shape daily life here, with their traditions visible in local celebrations and the way people gather throughout the year. The presence of these groups influences how the township looks and functions as a living community.

The area is best explored on foot or by bicycle, as the villages lie fairly close together and many paths run through the fields. It helps to get a map or explore the region in sections to maintain your bearings.

The ten villages each have their own names and individual character, yet all share the same dependence on seasonal rainfall for their rice harvest. Together they form an interconnected network of farming communities that have remained linked for generations.
