Daxi Old Street, street in Daxi, Taoyuan City, Taiwan
Daxi Old Street is a historic lane in Daxi District lined with two-story red-brick buildings featuring wooden storefronts and traditional architectural details from the late 1800s. The street maintains its original layout with covered walkways, narrow passages, and shops that have operated for many decades.
The street emerged as a major trading hub during the Japanese colonial period, particularly for silk trading and related goods. It later declined in commercial importance but was restored as a cultural landmark, allowing visitors today to experience its historical significance.
Wear comfortable walking shoes since the street has uneven stone paving and narrow passages with tight corners. Many small shops sell local crafts and snacks, but their hours can be irregular, so visiting in midday hours increases your chances of finding them open.
The arcades above the walkways were originally designed to shield merchants and shoppers from intense heat and heavy rain. These covered structures remain functional today and give the street its distinctive appearance, a feature rarely found in many other regions.
