Lanyu Flying Fish Cultural Museum, A museum in Taitung County
The Lanyu Flying Fish Cultural Museum is a museum on Orchid Island where visitors can see collections about the Tao people's fishing and daily life. It displays tools, traditional clothing, and objects that explain how the Tao have lived with the sea and its seasons for centuries.
The Tao people have lived on the island for about 800 years after arriving from the Philippines, bringing their own language and maritime traditions. Over time their culture became deeply tied to flying fish hunting, which became the heart of their way of life and spiritual practices.
The Tao people here speak their own language and keep their traditions alive through daily practices like fishing and canoe carving. These hand-carved wooden boats are more than tools for transportation, they are central to community identity and celebrated in special ceremonies.
The museum is located on Orchid Island, which you can reach by plane from Taipei or by ferry from Taitung, and you will need a rented scooter or car to explore the island. The best time to visit is outside typhoon season and during the flying fish season from March to June, when the community is more active.
The smallest airplane connection to an inhabited island flies to Lanyu with just 19 seats, making the journey itself part of the adventure. This short flight of only 40 minutes offers stunning views of the island's volcanic landscape before arrival.
