Balan Historical Site, Archaeological site in Beinan, Taiwan.
Balan is an archaeological site situated on a hillside southwest of Chulu in the Beinan area. The location contains remains of house structures along with fire pits and burial grounds where people lived centuries ago.
The site first came to light in 1996 when artifacts were found being sold at a local night market. Systematic excavations in 2003 uncovered seven house structures and revealed that people lived here roughly 600 to 1100 years ago.
The stone tools and pottery discovered here tell the story of how indigenous communities organized their daily lives and crafts. These objects reflect the knowledge and skills that people passed down through their settlements.
The site retains its natural grass cover and remains open year-round for visits and study. Since this is an active research area, visitors should avoid stepping on marked sections to protect the remains.
The site was rediscovered by chance when a bishop noticed ancient objects being sold at a market and recognized their archaeological significance. This chance encounter led to professional excavations and the recognition of this as an important settlement location.
