Keelung Island Lighthouse, Solar-powered lighthouse on Keelung Island, Taiwan.
Keelung Island Lighthouse is an octagonal structure with vertical black and white stripes situated on the northeastern coast of Keelung Harbor. The tower stands at about 12 meters tall and features a compact design adapted to the local environment.
The lighthouse was built in 1980 and marked a turning point in maritime navigation for the region. Since then it has helped guide larger vessels safely into the harbor.
The lighthouse represents Keelung's transformation into a major port city and serves as a symbol of the region's maritime importance. Locals view it as a landmark reflecting the area's connection to the sea.
Access to the lighthouse is by boat from Bisha Fishing Port, which takes about 20 minutes to reach the island. Visits are typically possible from March through October when sea conditions are more favorable.
Since 1998 the lighthouse has been powered entirely by solar panels and was the first of its kind in Taiwan. This sustainable approach showed early on that lighthouses could operate efficiently with renewable energy.
