Chernivtsi Oblast, Administrative region in southwestern Ukraine.
Chernivtsi Oblast is an administrative region in southwestern Ukraine that stretches over gently rolling hills and river valleys between the neighboring countries of Romania and Moldova. The landscape shifts between forested slopes, farmland, and river lowlands along the Prut and Dnister, both of which form the natural borders of the area.
The region was created as an administrative unit in 1940 after parts of the historical region of Bukovina passed from Romania to the Soviet Union. This border shift followed a political agreement that redrew the map of Eastern Europe before the Second World War.
The everyday use of several languages shapes the region, with many residents speaking Romanian or Russian alongside Ukrainian. This linguistic variety appears on street signs, in shops, and at public events, where more than one language is often heard.
Travelers will find border crossings to Romania and Moldova here, which can be reached by car or train. Road conditions vary between major routes and smaller country roads that pass through villages and fields.
A botanical garden on the grounds of the National University in Chernivtsi houses more than 1,300 plant species from different climate zones. The collection is used for research purposes and allows visitors to see rare plants up close.
