Ochakiv, Port city in Mykolaiv Raion, Ukraine.
Ochakiv sits on a peninsula where the Dnipro meets the Black Sea in Mykolaiv Raion. The position between river and open sea shapes the town layout with harbor facilities and access roads along the shoreline.
The settlement emerged in the late 15th century under Tatar control and changed hands several times. In the late 18th century, Russian troops took the fortress after heavy fighting against the Ottoman Empire.
The name comes from the Tatar term Alektor and was later changed under Ottoman rule. Today, memorials recall different eras and show the military past through plaques and old fortress remains along the waterfront.
From the harbor, you can reach neighboring towns along the coast by boat connections or smaller roads. The area works well for walking, especially along the waterfront promenade and the old fortress sites.
The narrow passage between the mainland and Kinburn Spit forms a natural bottleneck for ship traffic. This passage served for centuries as a control point for trade routes between river and open sea.
