Karasu-Bashi, Natural monument and protected area in Crimea, Russia
Karasu-Bashi is a protected natural site where underground water sources emerge at the surface after traveling through rock layers. These springs originate from the northern slopes of the Karabi-Yaila mountain range and create a significant water source for the surrounding area.
Explorer Gilbert Romm studied this site in 1786 and recorded the geological formations and water erosion patterns visible in the rocks. His work laid the foundation for understanding the natural processes shaping this area.
Local people have passed down stories about mysterious creatures said to inhabit the gorge, reflecting a deep connection to this natural place. These tales shape how residents understand and relate to the landscape.
This site is best visited during months when water flow is strong and the channels are fully active. During drier periods, the water level drops noticeably, which affects what you can observe.
The water flows through a network of channels that farmers have used for generations to irrigate their fields. This integration between the natural spring and agricultural use shows a long history of working with the landscape.
