Стіна Пам'яті, High relief at Baikove Cemetery, Kyiv, Ukraine
The Wall of Memory is a large sculptured relief at Baikove Cemetery featuring carved scenes along its curved surface. The varying heights and changing perspectives create different views as one moves along its length.
The work was created between 1968 and 1981 by two prominent artists from Kyiv who dedicated over a decade to the project. In the early 1980s, authorities damaged it significantly due to ideological concerns about its artistic style.
The relief tells stories of loss and remembrance through images that become visible as people walk past the curved surface. This place serves as a space where visitors can reflect on mortality and honor their memories.
Walk slowly around the entire structure to take in all the carved details and appreciate the full composition from different angles. Wear comfortable shoes as the ground around the perimeter can be uneven.
Despite authorities attempting to destroy it in the early 1980s, parts of the work survived and visitors can still see the marks of this violent intervention. These scars have become part of its story and testament to its endurance.
