Kadykovsky Quarry, reservoir in Crimea
Kadykovsky Quarry is a former limestone mine near Sevastopol that now holds a bright turquoise lake. The basin sits approximately 14 meters below sea level, with steep rocky walls rising around water that shifts in color depending on light and weather conditions.
The site was mined for limestone over many decades until operations ceased and the area was abandoned. After extraction stopped, rainwater and groundwater naturally filled the empty pit, creating the lake that exists today.
The site is accessible by car or on foot and offers a quiet walk along the quarry edges. Visitors should note that the lake is not suitable for swimming due to its depth and the surrounding steep rock walls.
The lake water displays an unusually intense turquoise color that shifts with time of day and weather conditions. This striking hue results from rock wall reflections and the water's mineral composition, making the spot a rare natural phenomenon in the region.
