Cannelton Cotton Mill, Historic cotton mill in Cannelton, United States.

Cannelton Cotton Mill is a sandstone industrial building that stretches along the riverfront with two prominent towers rising from its structure. One tower originally served as a fire escape route, while the other held water storage essential for mill operations.

The mill was built in 1849 and quickly became the largest industrial facility west of the Allegheny Mountains in its time. This massive complex employed around 400 workers at its peak and shaped the economic development of the region for decades.

The building represents a turning point in American manufacturing, showing how textile production spread beyond the established northeastern centers. The former mill tells the story of how such facilities once served as economic centers that shaped entire communities.

The building was converted in 2003 and now houses 70 residential units for low-income residents. Keep in mind that this is an active residential building, so access may be limited and you should be respectful of current occupants.

The mill was notable for its female workforce, employing significantly more women than men in production roles during its peak years. This distinction made it an important employer for women at a time when such opportunities were uncommon.
