Chester, County seat in Randolph County, Illinois, United States.

Located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, Chester spreads across 10 square miles at an elevation of 206 meters above sea level.

Samuel Smith established Chester in 1829, naming it after his wife's hometown in England and starting a ferry system across the Mississippi River.

The city maintains the Elzie C. Segar Memorial Park, featuring a bronze statue of Popeye, the cartoon character created by the local artist.

Chester connects to Perry County, Missouri through the Chester Bridge, the only Mississippi River crossing between St. Louis and Cape Girardeau.

The H.C. Cole Milling Company, established in 1839, continues to operate as a flour mill, making it one of the oldest operating mills in Illinois.
