Chemung County is an administrative division in southern New York situated along the Pennsylvania border. It encompasses several communities and the city of Elmira as a central hub of activity and services.
The county was established in 1836, formed from Tioga County. In 1854, a substantial portion of its territory was separated to create Schuyler County.
