Turtle Bay, Residential neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan, US
Turtle Bay is a residential neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan that stretches from East 42nd to East 47th Street between Second Avenue and the East River. The area contains a mix of residential buildings, with modern towers standing alongside older structures.
The name comes from a natural cove along the East River where Dutch settlers farmed in the 17th century. During the 20th century, the area transformed into a residential district shaped by the development of major institutional centers.
The presence of diplomatic missions creates a distinctly international character in daily street life, where you encounter people from many nations going about their routines.
The neighborhood is well-served by multiple subway stations, bus routes, and walking paths that connect to Grand Central Terminal and other parts of Manhattan. Proximity to the East River offers alternative pedestrian routes and makes the area easy to navigate.
Tudor City, located within this neighborhood, was the first residential skyscraper complex in the world, built between 1925 and 1928. This pioneering development showed for the first time that people could live permanently in tall buildings.
