Charterhouse of the Transfiguration, Carthusian monastery on Mount Equinox, Vermont, United States
The Charterhouse of the Transfiguration is a Carthusian monastery on Mount Equinox in Vermont, set across expansive forested land. It features separate living quarters for each monk as well as shared spaces for prayer and communal work.
The monastery was founded in 1950 and moved to its current location on Mount Equinox in 1960. The construction of the site was completed in 1970.
The monks here follow a tradition that places silence and personal prayer at its center. Visitors can see from outside how this way of life shapes the buildings and land around them.
The monastery is not open to the public, as the monks live a life of seclusion. You can view the site from outside or observe the buildings from a distance near the grounds.
This is the only Carthusian monastery in North America and preserves a monastic tradition spanning nine centuries. The Carthusians are known for their extreme requirements of solitude and silence compared to other religious communities.
