Delmarva Peninsula, Peninsula between Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean, United States.

The Delmarva Peninsula is a stretch of land between Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, running about 180 miles along the coast. Flat beaches line the eastern side, while the western shore is cut by inlets, salt marshes, and narrow waterways.

Algonquian groups lived here long before European settlers arrived in the 17th century, establishing ports and farms along the shore. Agriculture shaped the peninsula for centuries, until bridge and tunnel construction in the 20th century changed access and allowed coastal towns to grow.

The name blends the three states that meet here, and visitors notice shifts in local speech and town names as they drive from north to south. Small fishing docks along the shore still operate with methods passed down over generations, where oyster farming and crab trapping shape the daily rhythm.

Drivers use Route 13, which runs north to south as the main spine through small towns and farm country. Visitors should bring supplies, as distances between larger settlements can be considerable.

Every spring, thousands of horseshoe crabs come ashore in Delaware Bay to spawn, while migrating birds feed on the eggs along the sand. This natural event draws birdwatchers from around the world to the shallow coves and sandy flats.
