Forest Hills is a residential neighborhood in Queens, New York, where rows of Tudor-style houses stand alongside brick apartment buildings under mature street trees. The blocks follow a regular grid pattern that runs between Corona to the west and Kew Gardens to the east.
The Cord Meyer Development Company began planning this area in 1906 and renamed it from Whitepot to Forest Hills. Over the following decades, residential development spread across roughly 660 acres (267 hectares) of central Queens.
The Forest Hills Stadium, constructed in 1915, served as the venue for the US Open Tennis Championships until 1977 and now functions as an outdoor concert space.
Several subway lines run beneath Queens Boulevard and connect the neighborhood to Manhattan in roughly 37 minutes to Columbus Circle. Most shops and restaurants sit along Austin Street in the central part of the neighborhood.
Forest Hills Gardens was developed starting in 1909 using designs by Grosvenor Atterbury, who experimented with early prefabrication techniques for residential construction. The nearby stadium hosted the US Open Tennis Championships until 1977 and now serves as an outdoor concert venue.
