Ohiopyle, borough of Pennsylvania

Ohiopyle is a small borough in Fayette County in southwestern Pennsylvania, surrounded by the over 20,000-acre Ohiopyle State Park. The town sits along a 14-mile stretch of the Youghiogheny River known for its white-water rapids and waterfalls, offering numerous hiking trails, biking routes, and water sports opportunities throughout the densely forested area.

Ohiopyle was inhabited by Lenape peoples who gave it its name, and later European settlement in the 18th century brought conflict and eventually logging industry to the region. The place briefly thrived as a tourist destination when railroads brought visitors to resorts, but this boom ended, and the land was later preserved by conservation groups that converted it into a state park in the mid-1960s.

The name Ohiopyle comes from the Lenape language and means 'it turns very white,' referring to the foaming waterfalls of the Youghiogheny River. Today, the place serves as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts who come to experience nature directly and connect with the river and forests.

Visitors should arrive early, especially on weekends, as parking fills up quickly. Sturdy shoes, water, snacks, and a life jacket for water activities are recommended, and it is wise to check weather conditions and keep pets on a leash throughout the area.

On hot summer days, visitors can use natural waterslides at Meadow Run, where water flows over smooth rocks and lets people slide into cool pools. This rare geological formation was created by thousands of years of erosion and remains a memorable experience that many visitors overlook.
