East Boston, Residential neighborhood in Boston, US
East Boston is a neighborhood that spreads along Boston Harbor, formed by landfill that connected five separate islands into one continuous area. It contains waterfront parks, residential blocks, and Logan International Airport.
The neighborhood began in 1836 when five Boston Harbor islands were joined through landfill work. This project turned the area into a major shipbuilding and maritime industrial center.
The neighborhood shifted from an Italian stronghold in the mid-20th century to a Latino hub, evident in the many South and Central American restaurants throughout the area. These establishments reflect how the local population changed over decades.
The area is easy to reach by subway, especially using the Blue Line which has multiple stations throughout the neighborhood. The Silver Line 3 provides additional transit options for visitors and residents.
A former copper pipe factory at Boston Harbor Shipyard is now home to ICA Watershed, an art space. The venue presents contemporary exhibitions throughout the year in its converted industrial building.
