Bennington Street Burying Ground, Historic burial ground in East Boston, United States
Bennington Street Burying Ground is a burial ground in East Boston occupying a city block bordered by Bennington Street, Swift Street, and Harmony Street. The site holds more than 300 headstones and 12 tombs scattered across the grounds.
The burial ground was established in 1838 and contains gravestones dating back to 1819, beginning with the marble headstone of Mrs. Sarah Robbins from the earliest recorded burial. These early decades reveal its importance as a final resting place for Boston's growing population.
The burial ground displays headstones carved in German Gothic lettering and memorials for immigrants from various European nations. The inscriptions reflect the diverse origins of those laid to rest here.
The burial ground is typically locked and requires advance arrangement for access. Plan ahead by contacting the appropriate office at least 24 hours before your visit to arrange entry.
A survey from 1987 documented 302 headstones, including numerous Civil War Veterans markers and around 60 fragments of missing gravestones. These remnants reveal the archival work undertaken to preserve the history of this site.
