Queensbridge is a residential area in Queens along the East River waterfront with 96 buildings distributed across two connected complexes. The buildings follow a Y-shaped layout and house several thousand people along the waterfront promenade.
The housing complex emerged in 1939 during the Great Depression as part of a municipal program for affordable housing. It grew into the largest public housing project in North America and continues to serve as home for thousands of families today.
The area takes its name from the nearby Queensboro Bridge and became a focal point for hip-hop culture in New York. Artists like Nas brought the neighborhood to worldwide attention through their music and shaped an entire generation.
The area lies between Vernon Boulevard and 21st Street with direct access to public transportation and Queensbridge Park. Visitors find basketball courts here, a community center, and pathways along the riverside for walking.
All buildings feature red paint on the lower 1.2 meters (four feet) of exterior walls, giving the entire complex a unified appearance. This design element became an architectural signature and makes the development instantly recognizable from a distance.
