Lake Sakakawea, Artificial reservoir in North Dakota, United States
Lake Sakakawea extends across 307,000 acres of North Dakota, with 178 miles of length and more shoreline than California's Pacific coast.
The Garrison Dam project completed in 1956 created Lake Sakakawea, leading to the relocation of Fort Berthold Indian Reservation communities.
The lake bears the name of Sakakawea, the Shoshone-Hidatsa woman who guided the Lewis and Clark Expedition through these territories.
Lake Sakakawea State Park provides multiple boat ramps, camping facilities, hiking trails, and fishing spots along the southern portion of the reservoir.
The North Country National Scenic Trail begins at Lake Sakakawea and extends 4,800 miles across eight states to Vermont.
