Angle Township is an administrative area in Lake of the Woods County that covers roughly 600 square kilometers. The landscape is dominated by water, with countless small islands dotting Lake of the Woods throughout the region.
This territory became part of the United States in 1783 through the Treaty of Paris, though the boundary was drawn without accurate knowledge of the geography. The resulting border placement created its distinctive position north of the 49th parallel.
The Red Lake Indian Reservation occupies most of the land here and shapes daily life in this remote northern area. The tribal presence is woven into everything you see and do throughout the region.
Reaching this area requires either traveling through Canadian territory by road or crossing the water by boat. Summer and early autumn offer the best conditions for visiting.
This is the only place in the continental United States located north of the 49th parallel. This geographical oddity came about from mistakes in how the original border was drawn between the US and Canada.
