Del Norte, town in and county seat of Rio Grande County, Colorado, United States
Del Norte is a small town in Rio Grande County, in the southwestern part of Colorado, sitting along the Rio Grande river. Grande Avenue, the main street, is lined with buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s, giving the town a compact and historically rooted layout.
Del Norte was founded in 1871 and became an official town in 1872, first as part of Conejos County and then as the seat of the newly formed Rio Grande County in 1874. In the years that followed, gold and silver discoveries in the nearby San Juan Mountains brought miners who used the town as a supply base.
Del Norte takes its name from the Rio Grande del Norte, meaning 'great river of the north', a name that reflects how central water has always been to life here. Ranching and farming are still part of everyday life, and that connection to the land comes through in the feel of the town.
Del Norte sits where the valley meets the mountains, making it a convenient base for visiting different types of landscape in a short time. Summers are dry and warm but nights can be cool, and the weather can shift quickly, so layering is a practical habit.
Lookout Mountain, known locally as 'D' Mountain, has a large letter 'D' painted on its slope, placed there by early residents of the town. The hike up to it is short, and from the top you can see the full spread of the valley below.
