National Defense University, Military education center at Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington D.C., United States
The National Defense University is a military education institution at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington D.C., where officers and civilians pursue master's degrees in national security strategy. The campus spans several historic buildings directly along the Potomac River and houses lecture halls, research centers, and administrative offices.
The institution was formed in 1976 by merging two older military schools, the National War College founded in 1946 and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Both predecessor institutions had settled at the same fort after World War Two to modernize strategic education for American military leadership.
The names of the five colleges reflect the priorities of American defense policy, from joint operations to cybersecurity. Officers of different ranks work here alongside civilian officials, sharing libraries and seminar rooms along the Potomac.
Access is limited to enrolled students, faculty, and officially invited visitors, as the university sits within an active military base. Visiting arrangements must be planned and approved in advance, as security checks at the fort entrance are required.
The university library holds one of the largest collections of military literature in the United States and is accessible to researchers by prior arrangement. Graduates often become advisors on defense committees or take leadership positions in international security organizations.
