Third Avenue Bridge, Historic concrete deck arch bridge in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States.
The Third Avenue Bridge spans 1,888 feet across the Mississippi River, featuring five concrete arch spans with steel reinforcement and carrying four lanes of Minnesota State Highway 65 traffic.
Construction began in 1914 under city engineer Frederick W. Cappelen's design and was completed in 1918 at a cost of approximately $862,000, originally known as the St. Anthony Falls Bridge.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2024 as a contributing property within the St. Anthony Falls Historic District, the bridge represents early 20th-century engineering achievements in Minneapolis.
The bridge underwent major rehabilitation from 2020 to 2023, extending its functional lifespan by 50 years with new deck surfaces, upgraded lighting, and 13-foot wide pedestrian walkways on each side.
The bridge features a distinctive shallow S-curve design specifically engineered to avoid fractures in the limestone bedrock supporting its piers, showcasing thoughtful geological consideration in its construction.
