West Side Market, Public market hall in Ohio City, Cleveland, US
West Side Market is a public hall in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland with more than 70 family-run businesses selling fresh produce, meat, dairy products, baked goods, and ready-made meals. The main hall with its tall tower stands next to a covered outdoor section where additional vendors present their goods
The building was designed by architectural firm Hubbell & Benes and opened in 1912 as part of the city's fresh food infrastructure. Since then it has operated without interruption as a public market and remains the largest of its kind in Cleveland
Inside the hall Cleveland's shopping style shows itself: visitors taste house-made sausages or kielbasa right at the counter as they walk the aisles. Vendors often know regular customers by name and suggest recipes for fresh ingredients
The hall operates on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, with free parking available for 90 minutes. Early morning hours work best if you want to avoid crowds and see the widest selection of fresh products
Each year the hall welcomes over 800,000 visitors, with about one-third being Cleveland residents and another third tourists from beyond Northeast Ohio. On some Saturdays the aisles fill so much that movement becomes a slow stream through the stalls
