Cherokee National Forest, National forest in eastern Tennessee, United States

Cherokee National Forest spans across 655,598 acres through the Southern Appalachian Mountains, split into northern and southern sections by Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The landscape features rolling ridges, deep valleys, and numerous streams that flow through the protected terrain.

The United States Forest Service established this forest in 1920 to protect water resources and maintain sustainable timber management across the Tennessee region. This founding helped pioneer conservation efforts that shaped the modern landscape we see today.

The forest holds deep roots in Cherokee heritage, as the people inhabited these Southern Appalachian lands long before the forest became federally protected. Walking through the mountains today, you can sense this historical connection to the region.

The forest offers over 600 miles of trails, including sections of the Appalachian Trail, plus developed campgrounds with utilities and primitive camping options. Weather and trail conditions vary by season, so planning your visit around spring through early fall generally provides the best hiking experience.

The forest contains eleven wilderness areas and the Ocoee River, which hosted whitewater sports during the 1996 Olympic Games. This connection shows how the river earned international attention for its challenging rapids and scenic setting.
