Rainbow Room, Fine dining restaurant in Rockefeller Center, Manhattan, US
The Rainbow Room sits on the 65th floor of Rockefeller Plaza and offers upscale dining with views across the Manhattan skyline. At the center of the dining room, a parquet floor rotates slowly, surrounded by white-tablecloth tables and floor-to-ceiling windows.
The venue opened on October 3, 1934, as part of the Rockefeller Center development and quickly became a destination for upscale evening entertainment. New York City granted the space landmark status in 2012, protecting the original interior elements from alteration.
The name comes from the multicolored lights in the ceiling that cast different hues across the room and create a special mood in the evening. Guests now dine beneath the same art deco chandeliers and on the rotating dance floor that has invited dancing for decades.
Guests must reserve in advance and follow a formal dress code that requires jackets. Entry is through the Marquee on 49th Street, where elevators travel directly to the upper floor.
Eight dedicated express elevators carry visitors nonstop from street level directly up to the restaurant. These elevators were installed specifically for the upper floors and shorten the ride to the 65th floor considerably.
