Barbour County Courthouse

Barbour County Courthouse is a government building in Philippi constructed in Richardsonian Romanesque style, featuring a prominent offset tower with an open belfry and double arched window openings. The roof displays a pyramidal form topped with small spires that create a distinctive skyline presence.

This courthouse was built between 1903 and 1905 to replace a brick structure from 1844 that had served the county before. The earlier building held historical importance related to Civil War events in the region.

The building stands as the primary governmental center of Barbour County, hosting court sessions and maintaining public records for over a century.

The building sits at Court Square in downtown Philippi and is easily accessible from the town center. You can view the exterior architecture freely, though interior access depends on court office hours and administrative activities.

The exterior walls are constructed from Hummelstown sandstone quarried in Pennsylvania, a dense stone with deep brown coloring and subtle reddish to purplish undertones. This uncommon choice of material gives the building a warm and distinctive appearance.
