Adaland, Greek Revival mansion in Berryburg, United States
Adaland is a Greek Revival mansion in Barbour County situated on elevated land with commanding views of the surrounding area. The two-story brick structure features an L-shaped floor plan built atop cut fieldstone foundations, accompanied by a carriage house and a barn that date to the 1800s.
Augustus Modisett, a former Sheriff, built the mansion between 1868 and 1880 as his private residence on a hilltop location. A judge later acquired and renamed the property in 1920 to honor his family.
The mansion reflects how people lived during the 1800s through displays that show rural domestic life of that era. Visitors can observe period furnishings and understand the daily routines of families who called this place home.
The 17-acre grounds operate year-round as a venue for tours, celebrations, and special events hosted throughout the seasons. Advance planning is recommended since many dates feature private functions or scheduled performances.
The name came from the owner combining his wife Ada and daughter's names together as a personal tribute. This choice reflects how deeply the family identified with their home.
