Bargemusic, Classical music venue on Fulton Ferry Landing, Brooklyn, United States
Bargemusic is a concert hall housed in a restored coffee barge beneath the Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn. The space holds about 130 people with unreserved seating and features large windows overlooking the East River and Manhattan skyline.
Olga Bloom founded the venue in 1977 after acquiring a coffee barge from 1899. She transformed the abandoned ship at the dock into a cultural center dedicated to classical music performances.
The venue draws classical music lovers who experience performances in an unusual setting that creates closeness between musicians and listeners. Audiences sit near the performers in a way that feels more personal than what larger concert halls typically offer.
The venue is easy to reach from the waterfront area and sits in a location with beautiful views of the bridge. Visitors should know that the barge can feel like it moves slightly during rain or storms.
The barge rocks gently on the water, a sensation that musicians and audiences experience together during performances. This subtle swaying becomes part of the place's unexpected character and makes each concert feel special.
