Cuttyhunk Light, Maritime navigation lighthouse on Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts.
Cuttyhunk Light is a lighthouse located at the western end of Cuttyhunk Island, marking the entrance to Buzzards Bay. The structure consists of a white tower with a black lantern room at the top, visible to visitors exploring the island.
The lighthouse was established in 1823 after Congress allocated funding in 1822 for its original construction. Over the decades, it sustained damage from storms, leading to the installation of a metal skeletal tower in 1947.
Keeper Levi B. Clark conducted Sunday church services at the lighthouse from 1911 to 1917, bringing together local residents and summer visitors for worship.
This location is best reached during dry conditions, as pathways to the island are uneven and become slippery when wet. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear and allow time to walk across to the western end of the island.
Benjamin Sayer served as its first keeper and established standards for operating the light. His expertise formed the foundation for over a century of consistent navigation aid for vessels in the area.
