Edwin DeVries Vanderhoop Homestead, Historic homestead in Aquinnah, Massachusetts, US.
The Edwin DeVries Vanderhoop Homestead is a two-story wooden house from the late 1800s with a main section of approximately 24 by 16 feet and a smaller southern addition. The structure displays typical residential features of that era with multiple window bays and straightforward construction.
A former Navy sailor and whale hunter from New Bedford built this residence between 1890 and 1897 on land purchased from his father. The house was constructed during a period when whaling remained an important economic activity in the region.
The building now serves as a cultural center displaying exhibits about the Wampanoag people's history and traditions. Visitors find themselves in a space dedicated to sharing knowledge about the local indigenous community.
The house is located in Aquinnah on South Road and welcomes visitors during the summer months. Since the building has no heating system, visits are only possible during the warmer season.
A family member became postmaster in 1908 and published early writings about Wampanoag oral traditions in a local newspaper. These publications remain among the few written records that preserve knowledge and stories from that time.
