Philip A. Hart Plaza, Urban park in downtown Detroit, US.
Philip A. Hart Plaza is a waterfront park along the Detroit River in downtown Detroit, Michigan, anchored by the Horace E. Dodge Memorial Fountain at its center. The park also features two outdoor amphitheaters, open seating areas, food options, and restrooms spread across the grounds.
The land where the plaza now stands was once Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit, founded in 1701 by the French as a trading and military outpost. That fort marked the start of European settlement in the Detroit area and gave the city its origins.
The Gateway to Freedom International Memorial within the plaza tells the story of Detroit's importance as a crossing point for people escaping slavery to Canada during the 1800s. Visitors today can learn about the brave journeys that passed through this exact location.
The plaza is easy to walk through on foot, with level ground across the whole area, making it easy to get around for everyone. Warmer days tend to be the best time to visit, when the fountain is running and outdoor events may be happening.
Near the main entrance stands a tall stainless steel spire called the Pylon, shaped to echo the twist of a DNA double helix. Both the Pylon and the central fountain were designed by the same sculptor, Isamu Noguchi, giving the whole plaza a unified artistic identity.
