Dr. Ward Beebe House, Prairie School residence in Saint Paul, US.
The Dr. Ward Beebe House is a three-story residential building in Saint Paul displaying Prairie School architectural features, with cross gables and deep roof overhangs. The interior spaces are arranged around a central hearth, with bedrooms and a library sitting room on the upper level and connected living and dining areas on the main floor.
The house was built in 1912 as a wedding gift from the parents of Bess Beebe for bacteriologist Dr. Ward Beebe. It was designed by the respected firm Purcell and Elmslie, known in Saint Paul for their innovative architectural styles.
The interior showcases Prairie School design with open floor plans and handcrafted art glass insets that guide light in thoughtful ways. Large windows on the living side frame views of the surrounding landscape and create a flowing connection between inside and outside.
The location sits on Summit Avenue, a well-known street with many historic homes where the architecture is easy to view from outside. Access to the interior typically requires advance notice or a visit during a guided program.
It is the only house in Saint Paul designed by Purcell and Elmslie and combines modern Prairie style with English Arts and Crafts influences. This blend makes it a special example of how American and European design traditions came together in the early 1900s.
