Mai Châu

Mai Châu is a rural district in Hòa Bình featuring valleys and mountains with agricultural lands and forests spread across the region. The landscape includes rice paddies, hillside farms, and traditional villages scattered throughout the area.

The region was originally inhabited by the Xá people before Tai groups migrated into the area during the 7th century, changing the local population. This mix of different peoples shaped the region's character in the centuries that followed.

The White Tai and Mường communities celebrate their customs through local festivals and the creation of handwoven fabrics that reflect generations of knowledge. You can watch artisans at work in their homes, creating textiles using methods passed down through families.

The area is best reached from Hanoi with a drive taking several hours, with various transportation options available for the journey. The driest months offer the easiest conditions for travel and exploring the villages.

Residents construct traditional stilt houses from bamboo and timber elevated on posts, reflecting local building methods developed over generations. This design protects dwellings from ground moisture and allows natural air flow throughout the year.
