Sharma/Jethmun coastal area
Sharma/Jethmun coastal area is a protected stretch along the Arabian Sea coast in Hadhramaut Governorate, Yemen, inscribed on the tentative World Heritage list. The site safeguards mangrove forests, coral reefs and seagrass beds that support marine turtles, dolphins and migratory birds.
The coast served for centuries as a landing point for fishing boats and a stopover for traders sailing along the Arabian Peninsula. Nomination as a World Heritage site aimed to preserve the natural habitats and biological diversity of the region for the long term.
Access to the protected area may be restricted and depends on current security conditions and permits. Visitors planning to explore should check local regulations and possible escort requirements in advance.
The area holds one of the few mainland mangrove stands in southern Yemen, serving as a nursery for young fish and crustaceans. At low tide, sections of the root networks emerge, showing how the plants adapted to saltwater conditions.
