Birgunj, Border city in Parsa District, Nepal

Birgunj is a border city in Parsa District that sits at 92 meters elevation and connects directly with the Indian town of Raxaul. Located roughly 135 kilometers south of Kathmandu, it functions as a major trade hub linking Nepal to India.

The city was founded in 1897 when Bir Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana merged several villages near the Gahawa Mai Temple. That temple remains at the city's center and marks the starting point from which the settlement grew.

The Ghadiarwa Pokhari lake fills with crowds during the Chhath festival, when worshippers gather to perform rituals honoring the sun. Throughout the year, temples of different faiths scattered across the city show how Hindu and Buddhist communities coexist here.

The Tribhuvan Highway connects the city to Kathmandu, with flights from Simara Airport and a railway line to Raxaul offering alternative travel options. Knowing these different transport routes helps visitors plan their arrival and departure depending on their needs and schedule.

Narayani Stadium ranks as the second largest sports venue in the country and hosts cricket tournaments and football matches throughout the year. It has become a major regional hub for sporting events, drawing crowds from across the nation.
