Salyan is an administrative district in Karnali Province with varied terrain ranging from tropical lowlands to subtropical hill regions. The area is divided into several river systems and shaped by different elevations that influence its climate and vegetation patterns.
The district was part of the Baise Rajya, a group of 22 kingdoms in the Karnali region, before the Shah Dynasty incorporated it around 1760. This political unification fundamentally changed the administrative structure and relationships between local communities.
The population of 238,515 residents includes a majority of Khas/Chhetri at 57 percent, followed by Magar communities at 15 percent of inhabitants.
The district headquarters at Khalanga is now part of Shaarada Municipality and contains administrative services along with basic facilities for visitors. The area features different elevations, which should be considered when planning travel.
The Babai River flows through the southwestern section while the Sharad Khola river system drains the eastern half of the district's hill region.
