Rara National Park, National park in Mugu District, Nepal
Rara National Park spans mountainous terrain in northwestern Nepal and contains the lake for which it is named, located at an elevation of 2990 meters. The water is deep and dark, framed by snow-covered peaks, with forests and meadows covering the surrounding slopes.
The park was established in 1976 to protect the mountain landscape. Two village communities were relocated at that time to allow the protected area to be created.
Temples near the lake shore are places where visitors can observe local people gathering medicinal plants and tending to the land. These daily activities show how communities have lived with this landscape for generations.
The best time to visit is September through October and April through May, when weather conditions are more stable. Visitors should be prepared for mountain terrain and bring appropriate gear.
The lake is home to three fish species found nowhere else in the world. These rare animals are perfectly adapted to the cold mountain environment.
