Located in northwestern Nepal, Mugu District encompasses 3,535 square kilometers of land ranging from 1,201 to 6,717 meters above sea level.

The district has maintained traditional governance structures through village development committees until recent administrative changes integrated smaller units into larger municipalities.

The population includes 48.9% Chhetri, 15.4% Thakuri, and multiple ethnic groups speaking Nepali, Tamang, and Sherpa languages across the region.

Travelers can reach Mugu District through Talcha Airport with domestic flights from Nepalgunj or via a 900-kilometer road journey from Kathmandu.

Rara Lake, Nepal's largest lake, spans 1,583 hectares within Rara National Park at 2,990 meters elevation in Mugu District.
