Nagarkot, Mountain village at 2200 meters in Bhaktapur District, Nepal
Nagarkot is a mountain village at 2200 meters (7200 ft) in Bhaktapur District, located about 32 kilometers east of Kathmandu. From this elevation, visitors can see across to eight Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest and Annapurna, when conditions allow clear sight lines.
The settlement was once called Mandapgiri and served as a strategic fort to watch the movements of neighboring kingdoms. Over time it transformed into a retreat for the royal family.
The village connects with the Newar community through traditional temples and religious monuments that reflect Nepal's mountain spiritual heritage. Visitors can observe how these sacred places play a role in daily life and understand the link between the landscape and local beliefs.
Visitors can reach the settlement by regular bus services from Kathmandu. Accommodation ranges from basic guesthouses to hotels offering mountain views.
An observation tower at the site provides unobstructed views of the Kathmandu Valley and mountain peaks at sunrise and sunset throughout the year. The views change character with the seasons.
