Bir Rumah is a historic well in Medina with two sections, the main one descending about 37 meters below ground level. The site includes a mosque, date farms, and modern water facilities built around the ancient structure.
In the early Islamic period, Uthman ibn Affan purchased this well for thousands of silver dirhams to provide water access to all residents. The acquisition established an endowment that has sustained the water supply for the community across centuries.
The well functions as an active Islamic waqf, with its income supporting pilgrims who visit Medina's holy sites. This arrangement shows how water provision was seen as a communal responsibility rooted in religious values.
The site is located about 6 kilometers northwest of Masjid an-Nabawi and is easily accessible by car or taxi. Visitors should dress respectfully and be aware that this remains an active religious site where reverent behavior is expected.
