Sudair, Historical region in Najd, Saudi Arabia
Sudair is a historical region in central Saudi Arabia that spans a valley east of the Tweig escarpment. The area naturally divides into northern and southern sections and was long centered on farming and date cultivation.
The region formed through settlements of farmers ruled by local Emirs who managed water resources for grain and date growing. This traditional order lasted until Saudi Arabia's recent modernization transformed the area.
The region is known for its dark dates with strong flavor, which have long been traded throughout the Arab world. These fruits continue to shape how local people see themselves and their economic ties to neighboring areas.
The area sits roughly 150 kilometers north of Riyadh and is easy to reach via major roads. A new railway line and several highways link the region to large economic centers across the country.
A new petrochemical complex under development will create industrial links between Jubail on the east coast and Yanbu on the west coast. This project will transform the traditional farming region into a hub of modern trade.
